  • End Police Brutality Protest in Washington DC

Last night many in our community hit the streets in peaceful protest against police brutality. No matter your politics, we value this right and this freedom to express our feelings in America and we are appreciative of the ability to document and capture these moments through our lens.

Photography remains one of the most powerful tools to chronicle newsworthy events. With mobile devices and cameras at the ready, many in our community attended last night’s walk and we are better connected and informed today because they chose to share their stories with us on social media.

Thank you to all who tagged their photographs to #igdc and we encourage you to keep documenting and sharing. We pulled together some of the images that moved us and include them here.

Icebergs at The National Building Museum

IGDC was thrilled to be able to attend the preview event for the National Building Museum’s new summer exhibition Icebergs.  The museum’s summer installations in the Main Hall are always so creative and fun and this year’s is no different.  Designed by James Corner Field Operations, #IcebergsDC is an immersive look at scale, geometry and landscape.

There are three layers to see:  under the sea, above sea level and the whole piece within the historic building.  You can relax on a bergy bean bag chair, enjoy shaved ice from Daikaya, slide down the iceberg slides and view the tip of the bergs from the observation deck.

We had so much fun exploring and interacting with the installations.

Be sure to check out Icebergs, open now through September 5th, at the National Building Museum.  And to see more from our fun this morning, check out #emptyicebergs.

For the second year in a row, IGDC was happy to be invited back to the area’s biggest music event, Sweetlife Festival. Settled amongst the lush Merriweather Post Pavilion woodlands, the venue is the perfect setting for Sweetgreen to merge their two passions: good food and good music. Billed as an event that “brings together outstanding musical acts and curates the best in food and community” the festival includes chef collaborations, art installations, play areas and more.

On the roster this year was the expected mix of genres and talent. Veteran acts such as Blondie and Eagles of Death Metal rocked alongside up-and-coming acts like Vince Staples and Shamir and solid performances from The 1975, Halsey and Grimes. Despite the mid-day thunderstorm, ponchos came out and people continued to groove and enjoy their favorite performances.

    Embassy Row Hotel Walking Tour

This summer, IGDC has partnered with The Embassy Row Hotel in Washington, D.C. to launch a walking tour of our favorite places to photograph in the Dupont Circle neighborhood.

To participate, IGDC asked the community to submit images to #igdcwalkingtour. We received over 400 submissions which certainly made it difficult for our judges.  Selected images will appear, from May through August, on printed handouts to all hotel guests and visitors so they can visit the places for themselves.

We are kicking off the project and revealing the explorer’s guides on May 6 from 5pm to 7pm with a launch party to celebrate the project and hope to see you all there.  Embassy Row’s own Station Kitchen & Cocktails will be offering three cocktails inspired by this walking tour.

Congratulations to the photographers whose work was selected:

  • How IGDC Was Started?

    ·

    How IGDC Was Started?

I’m often asked how did I start IGDC.  What was my goal in creating this community?  And to be completely honest, the beginning was pretty simple and lacked much of a goal.  What the community has become is beyond my wildest imagination and is truly the result of passionate photographers who, like me, wanted a reason to get out and shoot.

I signed up for Instagram three weeks after it launched and, like many, was immediately hooked.  The experience was very different in the early days of the app and consisted of many incredible fine art photographers.  Back then, the people I followed around the globe posted beautiful landscape and nature photography, amazing images of famous landmarks and photographs that showcased the skill and techniques that a DSLR could capture.  You didn’t see many photos of people being social; the social aspect was more the simple act of sharing your work with an audience and friends.  It didn’t take long, however for people to search out photographers near them and, with Instagram’s encouragement through the worldwide instameet initiative, people began meeting and organizing photowalks to explore their cities and create together.  Once I was comfortable with the mechanics of the app, I turned my attention to finding people in DC who were also as obsessed as I.  When I heard about Instagram’s second Worldwide Instameet event during the fall of 2011, I was discouraged to find that no one had planned anything in DC.  With some trepidation and excitement, I decided to plan something myself.  Not knowing what response I’d have, I kept it low-key and planned a happy hour in the city.  To my surprise about 15 people showed up and we had a wonderful time.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/RlSUe/

As people started to leave happy hour, I kept hearing the same question:  what are we going to do next?  I knew then that if I wanted to see these fine people again, I needed to plan another event.

Fast forward four and a half years and IGDC has organized over 50 events all over the area.  We have collaborated with many organizations and businesses, such as REI, the National Portrait Gallery, Jrink, The Yards, West Elm, Capital Food Bank, the National Aquarium, Embassy Row Hotel, Dupont Underground, Kit and Ace, Mount Vernon, Washington Auto Show, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, DC Murals, Sweetlife Festival and Freer/Sackler.  We have also had the distinct pleasure of teaming up with Instagram to create and publish a map of important African American sites around DC for Black History Month.  Our community is 20,600+ strong and our #igdc tag has over 332,000 posts.  Happily, we frequently host out-of-town visitors and take great joy showing them our town.  Most recently, we’ve expanded our community footprint to include a Facebook page and this website.

To say the group has flourished is an understatement.  I am in awe of what we have accomplished and I am honored in the pride we display for our city every day.  This community blows me away and I am grateful for the incredible photographers I’ve met over the years.  Each one of you inspires me every day and I am humbled to share this journey with you.  I look forward to the next adventure.

    Stay inspired,
    Holly

  • Preview of Re-ball Winner Raise/Raze in Dupont Underground

IGDC had the pleasure of being invited to the @dupontunderground preview of Raise/Raze. Designed by New York-based firm Hou de Sousa, the studio won the international design competition, Re-Ball!, which required using the more than 650,000 balls from last summer’s National Building Museum’s exhibition of The Beach in an entirely new project. Having previewed the opening of The Beach last summer, we felt right at home in this new installation.

What helps make it feel so connected is the understanding that the installation was made possible by hundreds of local volunteers, many of which also enjoyed The Beach. For many it was a way to finally sneak a peek at the legendary Dupont Underground which has been closed to the public for a very long time but is again in the headlines to be reimagined into a new art space. And this is what the Arts Coalition for the Dupont Underground has been focused on since 2014 when they were awarded a five-year lease to explore and experiment in the tunnels.

While the ambitious design envisioned by Hou de Sousa has been abbreviated due to time constraints, the experience is still exciting and loads of fun. We hope you get a chance to visit.
