Instameet

We held our 3rd nightmeet August 6th on Roosevelt Island. Light painting was again the focus and included excellent instruction from Peter (@flint_photo). He brought his expertise and helped newcomers with setting instructions, tips, and advice to capture the best image possible. For the veterans in the group, Peter brought an amazing bag of gear that garnered incredible effects and imagery.

This past Saturday we teamed up with Philly-based (and soon to be based in DC) restaurant @honeygrow to explore a small slice of DC from Union Station to Union Market.

Our starting point was the Main Hall at the gorgeous Union Station.  We wanted to show off the gorgeous space now that the scaffolding (a mainstay for the past 40 years) has come down.  She is gleaming once again.  Next up was a color-filled walk through NoMA to see the many, many art murals. While it was hot and the sun was blistering, the color and creativity all around was more than enough to keep us from running to the nearest shade and air conditioner. We stopped at Storey Park first, where a very nice security guard let us into the fenced off space to shoot.  He didn’t have to let us in but he said he knew it was cool to see and thought we should get the opportunity.  One more reason to love our city–the people!  We spent a lot of time visiting the incredible new @powwowdc murals before moving on to Union Market to sample the new offerings from our friends at honeygrow and get a sneak peek at their upcoming menu. We can’t wait for their first store to open in Crystal City (August!) so we can try the stir-frys and salads.  After a quick cool off and with fuller stomachs, we had some fun with the murals around the market and chatted over some cold drinks and great company.

IGDC had the honor of being invited into George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate early on Sunday, May 29th. We were there as the sun was bathing the house in a warm gold light and just as the animals were beginning their day. It was such a peaceful time and even more special to see it without the hundreds of visitors that flock to the historic property every day (and yes, it is open every day of the year).

Not only the home of our first president, George Washington and his wife Martha, the estate was predominantly a working farm (George had 5 farms on the property!) and the property continues this tradition today. A visit to Mount Vernon is a step back in time. You learn so much about American history, farming, living on the Potomac, gardening, architecture and design and we loved exploring every inch of it. And, the historians and archeologists working at Mount Vernon are continuing to learn about our nation’s history and its first president every day. Their passion for the estate and their hard work to maintain it is truly inspiring.

Our day began at 8am and we were thrilled to have around 50 people join us–including friends from NYC and Philly. We took in the gorgeous Potomac River panorama then set off for the lower farm where we saw the sheep, boat building and weaving demonstrations, barn architecture and a spectacular view of the mansion. From there, we headed back up to the oxen pen and spectacular gardens.

Allowing the public to see the estate is actually a tradition started by George Washington himself. He understood the curiosity and interest and was happy to oblige any well-behaved visitors. We are appreciative of that and enjoyed our morning exploring with new and old friends.

In celebration of Earth Day and Instagram’s Worldwide InstaMeet 13, IGDC took to our own backyard and hiked the Soapstone Valley Trail. Soapstone has been voted “Best Place in Rock Creek Park You’ve Never Been To” by Washington City Paper and it is a beautifully serene and isolated spot in the middle of the bustling city.

We had plenty of rain in the morning but luckily it cleared and gave us the perfect day minutes before the walk started. We threaded water, stone-hopped over the creek, posed with nature and took every opportunity to stop and marvel at such a beautiful landscape. At the half-way mark we collected trash to help keep the park and our city clean.

The best part of every meet is seeing new faces and being with old friends. It’s always so much fun exploring Washington DC together and we love that this photo group has become family. For us, it has always been community first and we invite you to join us at our next Instameet soon.

House of Sweden in Georgetown let us have an exclusive look at their Next Level Craft exhibit.  Curated by creative director Aia Judes, the exhibition showcases contemporary Scandinavian handicraft and it couldn’t have been more fun.  With our friends, we explored, captured and enjoyed the mystical wonderland that is Next Level Craft.  Catch it before it closes on April 24th, 2016.

IGDC spent an evening with bunnies and light inspiration at The Yards Park for the two-week long Light Yards installation.  We couldn’t have asked for a nicer night and enjoyed spending it under the stars with our friends and new acquaintances.

To celebrate our collaboration with Instagram on their Make Your Map project, IGDC organized an instameet using the map created to honor Black History Month.  We were thrilled to work with the community to provide photographs for the map and have our city’s talent showcased for such an important event.  During the instameet we visited several sites on the map plus a few additional places rich in historical significance, such as the Carter G. Woodson memorial and local murals.
